A PLACE OF GRACE
For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink;
I was a stranger and you welcomed me; I was naked and you clothed me;
I was sick and you visited me; I was in prison and you came to me.
Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, my brothers and sisters,
you did it to me. Mt 25:35,36.
A PLACE OF GRACE
Our food pantry provides groceries for approximately 200 needy families on a weekly basis, with the exception of the first Thursday of each month, and the month of August. All of the recipients are our neighbors in the immediate vicinity of the church, residents of the Parkville Elementary School district. Special distributions of dental and health care products are made from time to time as well.
About 30 members and friends of Grace are actively involved in this ministry, and more volunteers are always welcome.
Some of the pantry volunteers meet on Wednesday evenings to pack grocery bags, unload cartons of food and sort donations of canned goods. Every week we handle about 5000 pounds of food. Early on Thursday mornings, more volunteers are on hand to collect special bread and bakery donations from area supermarkets, to open the pantry for distributions and to enroll new participants. Much of the food which we distribute is purchased from Foodshare; some comes from USDA supplies and from collections conducted by other churches and synagogues as well as by the Scouts and the U.S. Post Office.
Before Christmas, parish volunteers shop for toys and other appropriate gifts (such as clothing) for the children of our pantry clients. Clients register separately for this service and every effort is made to give the children presents that they need and want. Each year between 300 and 400 children are given gifts.
PARISH HOUSE ADDITION
In 1997 Grace church celebrated the successful completion of a major building project — a new wing of the parish house with a large basement storage where food supplies for the pantry can be kept cool and dry. The new wing also includes a convenient area for distribution of food as well as new parish offices. The parish house addition was dedicated on November 11th 1997 on the feast of Saint Martin, our patron saint.
